Marketing 101


Tell a Friend


Out of sight out of mind.
Whether your in business on line or off. "Out of sight out of mind" can be the kiss of death.
I am amazed how many people do not understand this.

Top of Mind Awareness. Or Toma for short.
Both Coke & Pepsi know how important Toma is.
McDonald's and most fortune 500 companies understand Toma.

But the average business owner, when I say TOMA 99 times out of a 100 I'm asked what's Toma?

We learn 83% by sight

We retain 90% of what we say as we do a thing

70% of what we say as we talk
50% of what we see and hear
30% of what we see
20% of what we hear
10% of what we read
So let me give you a few Ideas that can help you get more Toma.

First the newspaper.
Almost all Advertisers I consult with feel newspaper is not giving them a good R.O.I.. On average only 10% of the readers will ever get to the page your ad is on. Then only 10% of those people will ever take time to read your ad.
And average Joe will only retain 10% of what he reads.
Even worse the newspaper gets trashed, burned or ends up as lining in a bird cage.

Find a reason and do a press release ( free) you will get more mileage out of a press release the any ad you will ever pay for in the newspaper.
Once you have one frame it and hang it on the wall so everyone can see it.
Then find more reasons to do more press releases.

Next radio, at least we retain 20% of what we hear.
The down side to radio is even if it's a great station and they have a say 25% market share,
75 people out of a 100 people still will never hear your ad.
Plus now there is XM. radio and other services that are commercial free.

Now I recommend radio especially when you can get it for free. I will tell you how another time.

Should you decide however to put radio in your ad budget get a professional ad agency or at least a leading radio personality to make a jingle for you. People will sing along.

Another great way to do a radio ad especially when you are new to your market is to do your own commercials yourself.

If you run an effective campaign your clients will be telling you they are hearing you on the radio and they like your ad. Music to your ears!

Doing your own ads in your own voice is a great way to build trust in your market.

Another great radio ad is the testimonial ad. If your clients are happy with your product or service ask if they would like to help you by doing a recording for air play at your local station.

If their really happy let them create some real word of mouth advertising for you.
One of the main reasons a lot of people do not get results with radio ads is their ads sounds like everyone else's. Stop the bla, bla, bla. Think outside the box and create Toma.

Then there's T.V. Now it's true we retain 50% of what we see and hear together.
A 9 share is considered very good for T.V. This means 9 people out of a 100 Should be viewing your commercial.. hopefully not in the bathroom, getting a snack, or using a DVR. or Tivo.
Yea right there's still the 91% that didn't see your commercial?
